“Smile and the world smiles with you.”
I am often told that I smile a lot. It is true! It is second nature. However, I had never considered the impact that smiling could have on others until the day someone pointed it out to me.
“I see you smiling every day. I find it beautiful and it makes me feel good,” a colleague once told me. I understood at that precise moment that this simple gesture can have an impact on our professional lives and make a huge difference in the way others perceive and respond to us.

ABOUT

The power of a smile
When we smile, our brain releases endorphins that make us feel good. It also releases serotonin, which reduces stress levels, and dopamine, which helps increase concentration. These are three of the four happy hormones! Smiling therefore keeps us in a better mental state while we work and helps us stay productive throughout the day.
Smiling can also impact those around us. Studies have shown that when employees smile more often, their coworkers and customers tend to respond in kind, making everyone's day more enjoyable!
A leader with a contagious smile stands out in any setting. When faced with a challenge or difficult situation, their positivity shines through and encourages others to believe that anything is possible. This positive energy boosts morale, unites teams, and creates an environment conducive to problem solving and creative thinking.

Smiling helps with self-confidence
Even if we feel confident on the inside, our body language can sometimes betray our lack of confidence. On the other hand, when we enter a meeting with a smile, we communicate our confidence and openness to those around us. This helps build trust among colleagues and improve collaboration in the workplace.
Not only does smiling create an inviting atmosphere that encourages collaboration, it can also help demonstrate your enthusiasm for tackling the projects or tasks you’ve been assigned. In short, smiling sends the message that we are confident in ourselves and our abilities, which can go a long way in helping us achieve our professional goals!

Smiling makes you more approachable
When someone smiles at us, they immediately come across as more favorable. People who smile are seen as friendlier and more approachable—which is great news if we’re looking to build professional relationships! Smiling shows that we care about those around us and makes others want to get to know us better. A smiling face is often much more approachable than one that’s too serious.
People will gravitate toward someone who has a genuine smile over someone who looks intimidating. Smiling leaders tend to be more engaging because they have an easier time connecting with people on an emotional level and building trust between themselves and their team members. Smiling leaders are often better listeners. Their calm demeanor exudes empathy, which encourages conversations between parties instead of heated debates or arguments.
The key is to stay authentic . Smile, YES. Fake a smile, NO! Others will quickly realize if we force a smile that we don't really want to. The expected effects will probably not be there. The next time someone meets your gaze at work, take the opportunity to return a smile. Pay special attention to this precise moment and savor the moment. Not only will you make another person happy, but your own smile will certainly make you happier! And do it again, you will enjoy it!
