The business world is not easy. And you have to make a lot of sacrifices! This is what I kept repeating during a difficult episode of my life as a young entrepreneur in 2017. I was tired and at the end of my rope.

I had gained a lot of weight due to poor diet and lack of exercise. This was understandable, since the hours at work were endless. In retrospect, I was primarily motivated by the desire to raise money to get out of debt. Ironically, my business was not as successful as I had hoped, despite all my efforts. Was it because of the people on my team or because of shortcomings in the way I managed my business? Over time, as I developed as a manager, I realized that my company did not have a well-defined mission and that this had much greater repercussions than I had thought…

As I have grown as an entrepreneur, I have come to realize the importance of strategic planning within an organization. The company’s mission is part of it… I have come to understand that my customers don’t buy what I do, but rather “why” I do it. Modern history has shown that it is those with a sufficiently powerful “why” who have the ability to mobilize others. So, defining a mission for my company has become a priority.

However, I didn’t create it overnight. It took shape slowly, through discussions and readings. The book “Start with Why” by Simon Sinek was a particular inspiration. According to him, it is imperative for a company to make every effort to create clarity, discipline and consistency.

My story

I developed a mission that reflected my story, my values, my talents, and how I wanted to contribute to the community. A mission should be simple to understand and easy to communicate. I also wanted to develop a mission that would inspire all of my team members and demonstrate their dedication to good customer service.

This is how the mission of Excellence Construction Rénovation was born: We beautify neighborhoods with the excellence of our projects . This gave rise to a common vision in the team. It also created a new sense of belonging to the company. I also noticed that the tasks associated with my work became clearer. The purpose of a company guides the work of a leader or manager, then that of the employees.

Soliciting the opinions of my team members during the development of my corporate mission was a key element. I was surprised to see how crucial customer service was to them. I did not know how proud my colleagues were of our recent accomplishments. I felt it when the company received an award at the 37th Domus Awards in the “Customer Service” category.

It was our corporate mission that inspired me to found the volunteer movement Unis pour l'Excellence to make a difference in my community. Within my company, all employees are convinced that the entire community, including children, should be able to benefit from neighbourhood beautification. This project, which will be carried out to benefit the Fondation du Centre Jeunesse de la Montérégie , aims to offer the most beautiful environment possible to children who have experienced a difficult past.

Having worked passionately to grow my business over the past seven years, I have met several big-hearted entrepreneurs who have agreed to join the movement with us. This project will bring together more than 25 entrepreneurs and suppliers who want to make a difference.

Ultimately, developing a mission is critical to a company’s ability to reach its full potential. The most successful companies, including Apple and Facebook, have a clearly defined mission that inspires employees and users alike to stay loyal to their brand. It’s by serving a cause beyond personal gain that we find the greatest motivation to achieve.
