In 2017-2018, IQ supported nearly 1,500 companies in carrying out their projects, whether it be an expansion, an acquisition or even a transfer to the next generation. “IQ can intervene at all stages of a company’s life cycle, whether it be during start-up, growth or maturity,” explains Ms. Chaussé. “We also work in partnership with investment funds to support pre-start-up companies.”
A relationship of trust
“We think that Investissement Québec is known, but we realize that it is never known enough,” says Ms. Chaussé. “For some entrepreneurs, it can be intimidating to approach us, when on the contrary, we are accessible and we are there to support them in all economic regions of Quebec.”
The first step often consists of a discussion that will direct the entrepreneur to the right person. “Then, the business leader does not need to have all the information in hand,” continues Ms. Chaussé. “However, the better prepared he is, the better we will be able to inform him about the solutions adapted to his project. It is quite normal for things to be done in stages and for him to share his challenges with us. It is our role to discuss with him to get him to think about the DNA and progress of his project. Our job is to ensure that he understands the financial structure as well as his obligations to his investors.”

What solutions?
IQ offers financing from its own funds at rates comparable to those of other institutions. It also acts as the government's agent in managing programs targeting specific sectors such as steel, aluminum or the forestry industry. "These offers can be combined when a file meets the eligibility criteria specific to each program. IQ will then take care of the financial structure, loan authorization and discussions with potential partners."
“IQ shares the same values as Quebec entrepreneurs, including business growth, job development and maintaining head offices in Quebec. That’s what makes our partnerships strong!” – Dominique Chaussé
A patient partner
But what sets IQ apart from other institutions? Its patience! “It can offer capital repayment moratoriums that can range from six months to a few years,” she adds. “This allows the company to breathe since it will have fewer financial burdens to start its project.”
In addition, in 80% of cases, IQ offers financing in partnership with other players. “This complementary role allows us to share the risk,” says Ms. Chaussé. “Some projects would probably not have seen the light of day without our contribution.”
Another aspect that characterizes a partner like IQ? “Files are analyzed based on the sustainability of the business and job creation, not just based on its performance. Our strategic objectives are aimed at developing the Quebec economy,” concludes Ms. Chaussé.

What do companies like Écorécréo , Première Moisson and Solotech have in common? They have all benefited from the support of Investissement Québec (IQ). Despite the $1.1 billion in financing authorized in 2017-2018, the role of the “financial arm of the government” remains unknown to a segment of the business community. We discussed this with Dominique Chaussé, Regional Director, South Shore and Montérégie.
